Testing Your Computer's Memory Modules
October 29, 2002

Defective memory is probably the most common cause of lockups, crashes, and various other computer problems yet many people don't know how to test their memory modules.

There are very few programs available for testing memory, but luckily there is one very good free one called Memtest86.

Download Memtest86 3.0 and unzip it somewhere on your hard drive. Put a blank floppy disk in your disk drive. Double click on the file called install and give it the drive letter of your floppy disk (likely A:).

It will copy the program to the floppy disk. While keeping the disk in your computer, reboot. Upon boot-up, the program will load itself and begin testing your memory.
